Cai Quoquiang is an internationally renowned fireworks artist. One of his most prominent works was the spectacular opening fireworks display at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In June 2015, Cai showcased his huge masterpiece called “Sky Ladder”. Sky Ladder was approximately 1,650 feet long and 18 feet wide. Coated with gunpowder, the ladder was raised to the sky by a huge hot air balloon in Huiyu Island Harbour, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. Putting together this two-and-a-half minute pyrotechnics show was harder than it looked. Cai had attempted the same several times before he succeeded.

The artist dedicated Sky Ladder to his grandmother who raised him and fully supported his dream of becoming an artist. In the website, Daily Mail UK,
Cai says, "My grandma was born in a small fishing village in Quanzhou and sold fish to help her grandson realise his artistic dream".

The Sky Ladder concept was conceived by Cai when he was visiting Bath, England 21 years ago. He sketched his idea on the window of an art gallery.
