If you happen to visit Vergenoegd Wine Estate in South Africa, chances are you might encounter a legion of ducks marching in the vineyard.
Their dangerous mission: to protect the vineyard free from pests at all costs. Translation: they are given the freedom to gobble up snails, grasshoppers, and other pests that may ruin the valuable crops.
Acting as a natural pesticide, the quack squad have been performing their difficult mission since 1984 and have become a tourist attraction. Visitors can experience the “Duck Parade” twice a day during weekdays and three times a day during holidays and weekends.
Vergenoegd Wine Estate has been recognized for this unique technique and received a certification from World Wildlife Foundation for their biodiversity.
