Participants submitted their pictures in eight categories: Wide Angle, Macro, Wrecks, Behaviour, and Up & Coming (open to all photographers) and British Waters Wide Angle, British Waters Macro, and British Waters Compact (exclusively for British nationals and residents).
Italian Davide Lopresti beat 54 entrants from all over the world to become the Underwater Photographer Of The Year for his stunning image of a seahorse entitled “Gold”. The image also won the major award in the Macro category.
Judge Martin Edge describes the image as “this one has been shot to perfection. A simple composition with a balanced amputation of muted colour at bottom right of the frame. Blue surrounds the entire four corners which helps to keep the eye of the viewer firmly focused on the detail of the seahorse. The eye cannot escape the frame, it continues to rotate in circles. Complementary colours of blue and yellow are entirely responsible for the 'wow factor' which this image had on me when I first viewed it.”
The winning images for other categories include the silhouette of the cat shark inside the egg case, an old machine, the fishing behavior of a bear, a wreck and an island in one perfect shot, and a turtle that swallowed a jellyfish.
